What Vitamin Is Good For Hair And Nails

What Vitamins Should I Take To Improve My Hair, Skin And Nails?
The biggest news recently about beauty, especially hair, skin, and nail health, revolves around the ability of vitamins and minerals to help skin be healthy and young looking. Nutrients, vitamins, and minerals can promote hair growth, healthier looking hair, and help strengthen nails so they dont chip and break. This means not just nutrients found in lotions and creams that go on the skin, but those that are found naturally in the food we eat, and in vitamin and mineral supplements that can be taken to help improve hair, skin, and nails from the inside out.

Vitamin and mineral supplements added to a healthy diet can make such a difference that you dont need to spend a lot of money on a full regimen of skincare products. Fortunately, most of the same things that are good for your skin will also work to give you healthy hair and nails; that makes taking a supplement so much simpler!

–Vitamins C and E–
As far as your skin goes, both vitamin C and E are very important in stopping the negative effects of too much exposure to the sun, such as wrinkles and ageing. Vitamin E has been shown to decrease sun damage and wrinkles and smooth out the texture of skin. Long term use of both of these vitamins can reduce the chances of getting sunburnt and vitamin C can help with collagen formation.

For skin, hair, and nails, both vitamin C and E act as antioxidants. Vitamin E and C improve blood circulation (and nutrient delivery) to the scalp, resulting in healthier hair. C and E taken as a supplement and in a topical lotion can reverse the damage caused by free radicals, and help replace collagen and elastin.

Vitamin C also promotes healthy nails. Hangnails can be caused by a deficiency in Vitamin C. You can get vitamin C from leafy green vegetables, citrus (such as a lime, grapefruit and oranges), and cherries. A powder form of supplement is probably the easiest way to digest synthesised vitamin C. Just mix it in with juice.

–Vitamin A–
If the levels of vitamin A in your body are too low, you may experience things like dry and flaky skin as well as dry scalp. Vitamin A is important for maintaining healthy skin and repairing damaged skin. There are also vitamin A lotions that can significantly reduce wrinkles, and even help control acne.

Taking a vitamin A supplement (or beta carotene) helps the scalp produce the oils it needs to avoid flakiness and dryness. Pregnant women need to seek advice before taking vitamin A and everyone needs to be careful not to over do it. Too much can be toxic.

–Vitamin K–
In our bodies, the job of vitamin K is to help with blood clotting. For the skin it works to reduce dark circles under the eyes as well as fade bruising, especially when used as a topical cream. Vitamin K is made by bacteria in the gut so keeping your insides healthy helps with the production of vitamin K. A routine to support the intestines and stomach may be one way to keep your good tummy bugs happy and healthy and busy producing vitamin K.

–Biotin (Vitamin B7)–
One of the B vitamins, biotin, may one of the most important supplements you can take for you skin, hair and nails. Biotin (B7) is a nutrient contained the cells of our hair, nails, and skin. When you dont have enough biotin, itchy skin and scalp result as well as hair loss. Try a multi-B supplement that contains biotin and as well as Niacin, B5, B6, and B12, all of which are important for healthy skin, hair and nails.

–Minerals for Hair, Skin, and Nails–
Like vitamins C and E, the minerals copper, selenium and zinc, can help develop elastin to make skin tighter and smoother. They also have other benefits and are usually included in good multi-vitamin supplements specifically for hair and nails.

–Check with Your Doctor–
Before you begin taking anything new, its always a good idea to check with your doctor to make sure that they wont have any negative reactions with any medications you may be taking. The doctor can also advise you on safe dosages to take each day. Be sure to read the label and only take the recommended daily dose.

As complementary therapies are not tested in the same way as pharmaceutical drugs they have varying levels of effectiveness, so try a few different brands till you find a product that works well for you.

Biotin. Do not double up the dosage. Follow the recommended dosage and drink water with silica. Fiji-Water for example. Silica that is naturally found in the water is extremely good for hair, nails and skin.

Avoid a much as possible refined sugars.. they cause candidas build up in the body, which impairs the the skins main function of detoxification.

A Great Hair Vitamin To Promote Hair Growth HELP PLEASE!!!?
I’m looking for a good hair vitamin to promote my hair growth, I was wondering if anyone has either taken a good hair, skin, nails vitamin that you actually saw results, or if you know of someone that has and you witnessed the results. I’m currently taking GNC Biotin 600 and I really don’t like them, I guess cause I’m not seeing anything happen yet (although I just brought them like 2 weeks ago on the 15th of this month). So if you know of a good over the counter prenatal vitamin or just a good hair, skin, and nails vitamin I can take that will be proven to give me some results please let me know. Thank you so much. Maybe its too soon to tell, maybe I should stick out these GNC Biotin 600 and see but I’m what you call a little impatient (lol). SUGGESTIONS PLEASE!! Other than this Biotin 600. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
There is no such thing, there is no vitamin that will promote hair growth alot, if there was, everyone would be buying it.

You should take a daily vitamin and a “hair skin and nails” vitamin too. Biotin doesn’t do much in my opinion, but make sure you take your B complex vitamins and vitamin C, D, and E.

  23. QUESTION:
What is a good vitamin regimen for a female in her twenties?
I currently take a multivitamin (Centrum). I am interested in taking a Hair, Skin, & Nails vitamin, as well as Calcium Citrate with vitamin D and maybe Fish Oil pills. I don’t want to overdo it, but I would like to make sure I have everything covered. And yes I know a balanced diet and lots of water is most important..

    • ANSWER:
I recommend Phytopharmica’s Clinical Nutrients for Women to most of our pharmacy’s patients. Centrum has just a little of everything that you need, but will not cover in case you are deficient. MRM’s Bone Maximizer II is an excellent source of Calcium: It has Calcium MCHC (Microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite) which is the form the body breaks down the best, vitamin K, which puts calcium in a state that it readily grafts to the bones, Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol, which is the ACTIVE form of Vitamin D) that helps calcium to be absorbed properly, also this formula supplies magnesium and zinc- components that must be present for optimal calcium absorption. For fish oils: I take Metagenic’s EPA-DHA 720′s. This is the most economical buy for the amount of omega’s offered. Remember Omega content is not equal to total lipid (fat) content that may be posted on the label. Total OMEGA content (the active ingredient in fish oil) is equal to the sum of EPA + DHA components. These are just your basics. If you have any further questions or need assistance, please feel free to email me at vitaminherbalconsultant@yahoo.com or contact me via phone at (716) 282-1112. Hair, skin, and nails are a sign of overall general good health. That means a balanced diet, and multiple vitamins. These are best taken morning and night, with meals, since most of the ingredients are water soluble.

  29. QUESTION:
Parentally speaking, is it true that prenatal vitamins are good for your hair and nails?
…because I haven’t noticed a damn bit of difference since I started taking them years ago. My nails are still really thin and hardly grow, even after all these years of faithfully taking prenatals.

What can I add to my diet? Or am I just genetically predisposed to thin, shapeless nails?
I gotta say, my nails aren’t prone to breaking, so maybe they *are* working…but they’re still really thin. My nails will bend back but not break off.
Hippie: YES, I AM in a cold region, but it’s damp. Maybe it’s just because the heat indoors in the winter is so dry?

Do you paint your nails? If so, try cutting them short and not painting them for awhile. When they are painted a lot they tend to yellow and weaken.

Add: To answer your original question, yes prenatal vitamins are supposed to be good for your hair and nails. Could be your genetics, could be your climate? Are you in a cold dry region? When I moved to Florida from up north my hair grew faster and my nails are *much* stronger now. Sun, heat, humidity maybe?

So i have asked around and there has been a lot of people who suggest taking skin hair and nails vitamins

so i was just wondering, what are/were your experiences taking this vitamin (did it work? did you grow hair in places u normally wouldnt, did it speed up hair growth in other areas…did u break out etc etc)

furthermore, where did u get yours from, and what brand is it…

if im convinced, i might go buy some tomorow

also, i take biotin (1000mcg or something), folic acid (just 1 pill), and three fish oil pills a day (amazing for your heart and brain!!)
if i take these vits (skin..hair..nails…)do u suggest eliminating some of teh vits i take currently, or should i kep taking them

    • ANSWER:
Okay, to the answer from “BULLSH!T” That’s just straight up mean, just ignore what he/she said… And I think they help me out, I just feel like they make my hair a little healthier, not magical or anything but yeah it helps… And I would say those are all good vitamins, so keep taking them(: hope I helped…

I want a clear skin my face is full of zists and looks awful and tryed to wach it with Netrogena but it made face dry and have more zists ? what I should do I look awful theses days no good skn no good hair =ugly.Help me please
Thanks gays for the reply. I can not use cocunt oil because my face is oily and full of pulumbs already.
all clean and clear stuff made me have more zits and left scars on my face :( my face was not like this when I was a teenager it was clear now I’m 22 I have the worst skin ever

    • ANSWER:
Also, you should try exfoliating, toning, and then moisturizing, because that Netrogena stuff just stripped all the oils in your skin, making it dry, so in return your skin made extra oil, giving you more zits and whatnot.

Go with St. Ives Apricot scrub, it works amazingly at getting your dry, dead skin cells of your face.

  42. QUESTION:
Is there a good shampoo on the market to help hair grow out long faster?
I am currently taking Andrew Lessman’s vitamins Healthy Hair Skin and Nails and they seem to be working great my hair is growing well and my nails seem healthier than ever! I am looking for something in addition to the vitamins like shampoo to use to help. Anyway I searched but the reviews are so mixed. What do you reccomend?! Thanks!
Man- these answers suck ha ha

    • ANSWER:
LOL @ the answers sucking comment… but the 2nd person who said Mane & Tail was probably the best answer so far.

You can find Mane & Tail shampoo and conditioner at Wal-Mart… it’s usually kept really low, like the bottom shelf but I swear, from experience, it does work. It is a human formula of what was originally used on horses to make their hair grow long faster. As you may know, horse hair is used for human ‘weave’ (LOL) so they made a shampoo to make the hair grow faster.

I have used it before and it made my hair grow about 3 inches after 2 bottles, which is pretty good growth considering the rate at which hair usually grows!

      Good luck!

  43. QUESTION:
Do Hair, Skin, and Nails Vitamins Work?
I’ve been trying to grow my hair back out, but the process is long. I’m not looking for extensions nor am I looking for some miracle product to make my hair grow faster.

What I’m looking for is a product that will actually do what it claims to. Will the hair, skin, and nails vitamins really make my hair, skin, and nails healthier and grow better? I’d really just like to be healthy.

One more question, should I continue taking a regular multi-vitamin along with these or will I just be over “medicating” myself, as they say?

    • ANSWER:
Ignore the naysayers, vitamin supplements are very important and recommended by doctors. Nobody really eats all the nutrients that they should get daily, its nearly impossible to do that….so definitely take a multi-vitamin. As for the HSN vitamins, I heard they work. Get a good brand though, not those crappy pharmacy brands. Nutrilite is the #1 in the world, distributed to professional sports teams. I used to sell them but not anymore, although I still would only take their vitamins.

  45. QUESTION:
Does anyone have proof on what vitamin E is good for?
people say that it is good to get stronger and longer hair and good for skin and that it srengthening nails. is that true?

    • ANSWER:
Vitamin E was discovered in 1922 with experiments on rats. When fed a purified diet devoid of vitamin E, the rats became infertile. Wheat germ oil added to their diet restored their fertility. Later, the oil-based substance was isolated and called the “antisterility” vitamin. (Tokos and phero are the Greek words for “offspring” and “to bear,” so tocopherol literally means “to bear children.”) Though there is no clear deficiency disease in humans, vitamin E is well accepted as an essential vitamin. There is some question, however, as to whether vitamin E is needed for fertility. From general public experience, though, it seems to be clear that vitamin E makes a difference to many. The average diet today contains much less natural vitamin E than it did 50 years ago; we will see soon why, and what vitamin E actually does in the body.

  46. QUESTION:
Looking for some good hair products?
I’m looking for a couple different types of hair products that aren’t expensive.
I have really thick, coarse, frizzy hair and it is very damaged!
    I’m looking for:
a smoothing serum or paste of some sort that smoothes out frizz and makes hair soft and shiny to apply after styling my hair. (not an oil, because I straighten my hair usually everyday, so I don’t want to deep fry my hair. haha…)
a conditioner for dry damaged hair

any good suggestions? My hair IS coloured, by the way. So something for coloured hair is preferable.

What are some other products that may help out in keeping my hair healthy?

Also, has anyone tried the Super Potency Biotin vitamins for skin, hair, and nails?
What are your opinions on them?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks :)

    • ANSWER:
My hair have been on both sides of the fence, and they didn’t have very many products to work with, now it is a billion dollar business, and their main job is to compete with the other, NONE. is better than the other, but the same method for damaged hair applies everywhere. Shampoos are meant to clean, and oil & conditioner are meant to keep hair moisturized.

Shampoo. Condition. Towel dry, scrunch with gel like Samy, blow-dry using a diffuser briefly, toussle the hair, finger comb, shake your head & you’re good to go. If you don’t have a diffuser, use a blow heat dryer on low for 5 mins.
When you wake up, instead of shampooing again, keep a bottled water filled with water/conditioner and spray on your hair. Scrunch, finger comb and you’re good to go!

One method to make it look fuller, add body, bouncier, thicker, softer & shinier hair is to set your hair with plastic curlers after you towel dry, you’ll end up with uniform balance of curls. Blow dry briefly while curling them in curlers. Take them out, and finger comb to style. Used by the best hair color models, and the fashion industry, like Victoria Secret Fashion Show Dec. 2009, America’s Next Top Models, EXPRESS, Dancing with the Stars . . . . and continued to be used today where salons care about pampering your hair. When you see hair on TV a hair color commercial, they’re not done by curling or straightening tools. Hair that shines like that and feels like hair, not hay, has to be done by the best hair tools available w/out damaging to the hair. When you take the curlers out, finger comb to style or lightly brush. Tousle the hair up. or shake your hair. You can use large, medium or small curlers, that depends on the length of your hair.

Save your money instead of buying hair growth products or supplements, etc. . . . Vogue Dec. 2010 issue has a section on biotin, etc. .

The FDA don’t even approve of them. Because of inadequate quality control and inspection, supplements contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, or prescription drugs have been sold to unsuspecting consumers. And FDA rules covering manufacturing quality don’t apply to the companies that supply herbs, vitamins, and other raw ingredients.
Beginning in February 2008, they experienced one symptom after another: diarrhea, joint pain, hair loss, lung problems, and fingernails and toenails that fell off.

According Dr. Melissa Piliang, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic. Americans spent an estimated 6 million on hair loss products last year, and chances are some of that money was not well spent. Don’t let charming salon owners, seductive ads or fancy gimmicks convince you otherwise.

CNN, Slate, Consumer Reports, MSN, YAHOO have posted them online for years how people spend billion per year on vitamins and supplements.  According to Everyday Health, here’s an article that will tell you why . . . those PRODUCTS by any other name do NOT WORK.  It is false advertisements.

Growing hair, nails doesn’t come from a bottle or pills and hair products do not speed hair growth. Any hair oil, is another form to keep hair moisturized, nothing more. Good skin comes from not exposing too much from the sun, and from not taking hot long baths. Skin is like that of grapes, nothing can plump them back once they become raisins to grapes.

I know hair. I have over 4 decades of hair know-how. I have silky, shiny, soft, smooth very healthy hair down to my knees. Previously damaged by perming & dyeing in the 80′s & 90′s. I’ve known people in their 30′s whose hair stopped growing from ironing their hair in the 70′s. When I was in HS, my hair grew from bob to waist length in 3 1/2 years (not bra strap as stated earlier).

  47. QUESTION:
What is a good nail solution to make my fingernails grow?
My fingernails have always been very weak and thin. They grow out a little bit. Then they will start to split and tear. I keep my cuticles neatly trimmed. I use hand lotion and only trim the torn or splitting nails with nail clippers. The only thing I found that helped my nails was Nutra Nail Maximum Strength nail hardener. They stopped making that about 2 years ago. I tried the Nutra Nail with nylon and Teflon. I tried the diamond shield Nutra Nail. None of it seems to work. I can’t use Sally Hansen nail products. I’m allergic to them. I’ve even went to the nail salon to try to get them to grow. I’m taking a hair and nail vitamin also. Can anyone suggest a good product for me to try. Thank you in advance.

    • ANSWER:
I take a prenatal vitamin they work a lot better than the hair skin and nail vitamins (no i’m not preggo and they are not harmful for non pregnant people) and then i use sally hansen nail hardener

So about a month ago I started taking “One a Day” vitamins, with pretty much all vitamins in it. I eat very healthy, plenty of fruits and veggies every day. So what specific vitamins are good for hair/nails, and also what else can I do besides taking vitamins? Thanks!
