Too Much Protein Hair Loss

Can Too Much Protein Hurt You
People know that by eating a high protein and low carb, low fat diet, they will lose weight. But it is not worth it. When you eat too much of carbs or fats, you store it as body fat. When you eat too much protein, where do you store it? Your body cannot store it. The body has to get rid of it. It breaks it down. People eat way too much protein. When the protein is broken down, it creates toxins and acids.

The acids cause your body to remove calcium from your bones to neutralize the acids. When the body breaks down the protein, the toxins created can attack your arteries causing strokes, high blood pressure and heart attacks. College textbooks on nutrition say that protein deficiency is rare in the world and does not exist in this part of the world. What this means is that even though there are millions starving to death due to a lack or fats and carbs, it is rare for them to not get enough protein.

The brain needs lots of carbs. When a person does not get enough carbs, that person can end up depressed. This can lead to someone killing themselves. It is not a good exchange to end up dead because you wanted to lose weight. Also the brain needs plenty of carbohydrates for you to sleep well. If you are not getting enough carbs, that can make it hard to sleep leading to mental problems and even a nervous breakdown.
Of course the good carbs from foods made by nature like fruits and vegetables are good for you. The foods that are made by man have bad carbs like with candy, cookies and cakes. These foods are designed to make you fat and addicted to food. Rice and wheat are unholy grains that are bad for you. The carbs that are good for you include the whole grains like millet, kamut, brown rice, whole wheat, wild rice, buckwheat, spelt, quinoa and spelt.

Fats are needed to lubricate the brain, arteries and skin. A lack of good fat (like omega-3) can cause you to become depressed. It can also lead to high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes. Also it can cause skin problems. The bad fats are bad for you. But the good fats are good for you. Fish cannot be included as good fats since there is too much mercury in them from pollution. But you can get good fat from avocados. It is 60% fat and it is great for you. This good fat has an anti-inflammatory effect on your body and joints.

When they are soft but not mushy, they are good to eat. Sometimes they have brown in them and they are not good so it is like a gamble buying them. But it is well worth it. Other good fats are olives, olive oil, canola oil, nuts and seeds. Studies with olive oil show that it helps your arteries and helps you to be thinner. Flaxseeds, walnuts and pumpkin seeds are good sources of omege3s, a fat that people do not get enough of.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
does eating too much protein cause hair loss?

    • ANSWER:
      what are you an idiot!

  2. QUESTION:
How to naturally condition hair, and how much hair loss is too much?
I’m not really sure if I’m losing too much hair. I’ve looked online for a while and most people say this is normal. I’m not losing clumps or anything but if I run my hands through my hair then I might get a hair or two every time, which I am not used to happening. Also when I brush my teeth and stuff I’ll notice hair on the sink and stuff and when I wake up I’ll see like 5 hairs on my pillow. My hair was really thick and my mom says she can’t tell a difference in the thickness so it hasn’t really gotten that bad but I’m not sure. Is this normal or is it too much. It is more of a nuisance because I constantly have to be picking up hairs but it seems to be a bit much. And I know…. “100 hairs a day is normal” but I can’t really collect all my lost hair from the drain and stuff and then count them at the end of the day. Is this normal?
I also used to be a vegetarian and realised that I was not getting enough protein from other things and it was too difficult to be planning everything out so I quit at least until my hair grows back. Its been almost 2 weeks and my hair loss has not reduced. How long should it take for it to stop.
The last thing is, if this is normal, are there any natural conditioning treatments that I can do at home to strengthen my hair?

    p.s.
I realize that diet is very important in keeping hair healthy so please don’t be redundant and tell me to get enough protein because that is why I quit being a vegetarian. FYI
forgot to add but I’m fifteen years old if that helps at all

  3. QUESTION:
Does food supplements cause hair loss?
Ive been told that too much protein causes hair loss..IS this true?what is the reason behind it?

    • ANSWER:
it is not true at all. your hair is made of 100% pure protein. hormone imbalance caused from using steroids can cause hair loss that is the only way you will cause premature hair loss.

  4. QUESTION:
Hair loss after carbohydrate meals, but not much after higher protein meals..?
I think this could have something to do with blood sugar levels and maybe when my blood sugar levels get too high with carbs they cause my hair to fall out more…I was off a med that I was on for years that kept my blood sugar low as a side effect..now I’m noticing it more..I feel better when my blood sugar is higher than it was then but the hair loss is more and I can notice it after eating a meal with a lot of carbs…will exercise hurt or help in hair loss and is there any supplement I can take to prevent blood sugar from spiking too much without making me have low blood sugar for a long period of time…I figure a low carb diet would keep my hair lasting longer but do not wish to go that route
P.S. by carbs I also mean refined carbs like sugars too

  6. QUESTION:
HELP! Curly hair gone horrible after too much straightening! ?
I used to have really curly hair in ringlets, but as many of us did I started straightening it when I was around 16. I am now 23 and have had enough of hours of straightening every day! I know my hair is damaged, as it now dries frizzy, some bits straight some wavy and generally a big mess!! I have very short hair, chin length and I am at a loss as to what to do! I’ve tried protein treatments, hair masks, ieverything! I can’t get too much cut as its already so short but I really want my curls back ;(

    • ANSWER:
Hey, I’m 14 and I only started embracing my curls this year. Your hair is super damaged like you said, and it will take a while for your hair to recover.
It may not be from the straightening, but some hair just deciedes to go curly/straight randomly. My friend used to have pin straight hair that is turning super curly!
But, seeing as you have curls still, you may be able to get them back with special curl care.
Take a look at naturallycurly.com it is an AMAZING website that has so much advice!
Consider going on the Curly Girl Method- eliminating all sulphates and silicones in your hair products because they dry your hair out.
Also look at the CurlTalk part.
It has so much information I have learnt from and I am on my way to amazing curls! (:

  7. QUESTION:
Pet rat advice? rat losing hair and looking poorly?
I have two pet rats one of them seems to be ill, it’s coat has never seemed as thick as the other but recently she has gone almost bald under her belly, on her sides and face also where these bald patches are she has scratched to the point where she is full of scabs. Shes 1 and a half years old and six months ago she had a lump removed from her neck. I’ve been to the vets a couple of times but the vet said it’s not mites and we asked about whether it could be her diet (I read too much protein could cause hair loss) but was told this was unlikely as the other rat is healthy. Shes been very active up until this last week but she is now struggling to walk, I’m not sure what else I can do. Any information would be appreciated as I’m really worried about her.

    • ANSWER:
I’m not really an expert on rat sicknesses, but you could ask here: http://www.goosemoose.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,118/forum,rat/

That’s where I get all my info from. The people there are mostly nice. =)

  8. QUESTION:
How can I keep my hair from falling out and get protein?
I’m 14, and a vegetarian. I’ve had thick healthy hair all my life.

I’ve been straightening it for 3 years (I always use a low temperature, so I won’t hurt my hair.) and I use special moisturizing shampoos and conditioners to keep it healthy. I also get hair cuts every 6 weeks to keep it fresh. I’ve never had a problem with my hair, until now.

I became a vegetarian 7 months ago and have stuck to it. A few days ago I noticed that lots of hair was coming out as I combed it, and I usually lose hair in the comb, but this time it was a LOT of hair. I have also been noticing my hair feeling thinner lately, but its FAR thinner than usual. I don’t have any bald spots and its not super noticeable, but its noticeable how thin it’s gotten. My mom says that its probably because of lack of protein because of my vegetarian diet but I’ve been eating lots of eggs.

In summary, what I need is some advice on what to do. I want to continue being a vegetarian because its a favorable life style. I was wondering if there are any affordable products that make hair thicker (it could also make hair healthier too, but my hair feels pretty healthy.) and also help with hair loss. I also was wondering if anyone knew about any protein supplements or vitamins one could take in order to get the daily allowance of protein.

NOTE: I was going to try ovation, but its 100 dollars plus shipping and handling! I’m 14 and I don’t have 0 to spend on hair products.

    Thanks so much!!

  10. QUESTION:
    Hair loss/thinning as a vegan?
To summarise my situation, I went vegan in early August last year. For the first few months I was the healthiest I have ever been. I felt great and started becoming more active, then made the decision to lose a bit of weight in October (something I had wanted to do for a long time, but struggled with when I was still being tempted by dairy chocolates and greasy chicken). I got a bit carried away to say the least and ended up at a BMI of 17 earlier this year. While I was at that low weight, my hair started thinning. I attributed it to me being underweight and not eating enough, but while I was getting back to a healthy weight and eating much more, including much more protein than I had been eating, the hair thinning has only slowed and not stopped. There is still substantial hair loss whenever I wash my hair (it has nothing to do with the products I use, I’ve been using the same products in my hair since August). It’s not too noticeable yet but obviously I don’t want to let my hair keep falling out, because at this rate it will be quite noticeable within the next few months or even weeks.

Anyway, I am going to ask my doctor about it next time I see her, which will be in two or three weeks time, but for now, does anyone know what could be the problem here? I eat quite a bit of protein, sometimes over 60g in a day but usually somewhere between 30 and 50g. I take a women’s daily multivitamin as well a vitamin d supplement prescribed by my doctor. I’ve tried Googling this but every article I read talks about protein when I really don’t think that’s my problem! (as stated, I get enough protein!) Could it be a sort of delayed effect from the emotional and physical stress I was going through in January/February with being underweight? And if so, if I keep eating healthily will the hair loss stop? Btw, I’m still vegan and plan to stay that way :)

    • ANSWER:
hair can take a while to get back to ‘normal’ thickness after its been thin

if your not eating right, that will definately be making it thin, hair and skin depend on all the vits same as you do

iron and oxygen are important for hair,
im not a doctor but having recurrent iron deficency anemia means i understand some of that in a small way

your blood needs to be able to carry the nutrients to all your body,
and if it cant do it well, your body puts certain things to the top of the list, like lungs, heart, brain etc etc
and hair , skin etc are not so important next to those

as you said, its not protien thats likely to be your problem, tho if your not eating well and getting very thin, it will be part of it

you can start trying to eat more green leafy veges, spinich is a great one, and kale, both high in iron

and maybe taking some iron suppliments, tho id want till you see the doctor and get an iron test before that
otherwise you may not get a very accurate test if your already taking iron

the reason you cant find it easily is cos sadly the medical world isnt yet fully caught up to iron and hair /health issues

if you keep eating the right things yes it should get better and even stop
but if you have heavy periods and dont make up for that iron loss, it will keep happening, (hence recurrent anemia)
so it can be a long term issue , but once you get it under control, its not so difficult to deal with it

      :-)

  11. QUESTION:
hair loss after extreme diet, how long does it last?
so i was stupid and was on a stupid diet, only for a month of so though byt still it wasnt balanced and i have been eating healthy again for a good 3 months now, but just these last few weeks i have been experiencing hair loss.

i know that my diet was the cause beacuse i am otherwiose healthy e.t.c and i read that it will shed like a few months after the incident of stress/diet e,t,c

but has anyone experience this? when will it stop. im only 19 and my hair was my pride and now i feel ugly and disgusting and i just want to shave it literally cos its so ugly and annoying.

i eat a lot of protein, multi vitamins and have a good baalcned diet now,how long does shedding normally last? my hair is naturally thick so luckily it is thinning but not too much but i still want it all back!

    • ANSWER:
You will get over it soon as you have started eating healthy again. Food rich in vitamin A, B, C, E, K, magnesium and zinc are important for healthy hair and also prevents hair loss. Hair is made up mostly of protein so a protein rich food is also recommended. Check out http://usefulinfo-hairloss.blogspot.com/ for more info.

  12. QUESTION:
I wanted to loss weight faster. So I did my best to loss weight. and I lost weight and hair! But why hair??
I didn’t want a surgery or I didn’t want to have pills to loss weight. Still don’t want those. So, I decided to have balanced diet and exercises. I started to have vegetables, all kinds of fruits, fish for protein, 2 breads for a day, plenty of water, pickle & lemon juice without sugar. I didn’t have chance to go to gym or doing outdoor exercises, so I rather started working out at home like doing free hand exercises for like half an hour and using running machine for like 40 minutes a day. It was really working and I lost like 7 kgs within a month.

But the problem is, I lost plenty of my Hair with Weight! I could realize that I am losing hair coz I completely stopped eating Rice. I used to eat rice @ launch time and ate bread @ dinner time. When I was dieting, I used to eat 2 breads for a day @ breakfast time. For the deficiency of carbohydrate I lost too much hair. Then when I though of start eating carbohydrate again (not too much, balanced) I realized that Avoiding Carbohydrate is the fastest way to loss weight and it was the main reason I was loosing weight and if I start eating the Rice and Bread and all the carbohydrate contaminated foods again, I’ll gain the weight again that I lost, or if I start doing exercise more (though I don’t get that much time), I’ll not loss weight as fast as I was loosing weight before.

So, as you can see, the whole planning was working out, but I had to stop doing all those because of the falling of my hair.

SO, can you please tell me a way to loss weight faster without loosing hair??

{I was happy by the way I was loosing my weight (except the hair falling part). If you suggest me something similar to my way of loosing weight, it would be pretty much helpful for me.
    Please don’t suggest me to go to gym/outdoor exercise or having pills/surgery}

    • ANSWER:
First of all congratulations on losing weight. I think you need to go to your doctor and find out if you’re lacking in a nutrient like iron that might be causing the hair loss. Nutritional deficiencies can cause hair loss. Stress can cause hair loss. Hormonal changes can cause it too. When you lose weight you do affect your hormones. Even having something like ring worm in your scalp can cause it. I tried to find the webmd site that I got this info from last year but I can’t find it. I had 3 surgeries in like a 3 month period last year and didn’t eat well during the course of all of that. Plus the anesthesia can cause hair loss too. Anyway, I looked all of that stuff up then and that’s where I got the info. I took vitamins for a few months and started eating better and stopped. You should really consult a doctor because if they find the cause they can stop it. Good luck.

  14. QUESTION:
    Does Pantene Beautiful Lengths work?
I have long hair that breaks off in small pieces at the end but most protein conditioners dry my hair out too much. I’ve thought about trying pantene’s beautiful length stuff but I’m hesitant after reading all these reviews that it caused hair loss. Does it moisturize well? I have long medium thick hair that is slightly wavy. Would anyone recommend it?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, Pantene is a good brand.

  15. QUESTION:
Heeelp Me…. Am I Protein Deficient?
I’m not a really healthy vegetarian, so I thought the cause of my recent hair loss might be because of my protein lacking diet.

During the week the day consists of:

Breakfast- Usually just a cup of coffee. If I’m feeling extremely weak I’ll have a mini blueberry bagel without anything on it or maybe a frozen gogurt. Sometimes I just won’t have anything.

Lunch- If I even remember to pack anything I usually have some fruit snacks, a banana or apple, and some chex mix. Again, sometimes I’m just not hungry for lunch.

Snack- Changes through the days between yogurt, some chex mix, some fruit snacks, a mini bagel, some chips, an apple, or just a huge glass of 1% milk.

Dinner- Dinner varies. I eat a lot of grains- breads, noodles, tortillas, ect. I try to eat some kind of veggie with my dinners, but usually that’s just a small serving of mushrooms or avocado. And does tomato soup count?

I also drink a ton of milk for some reason. I crave it all the time. During the weekends I usually will try make a fried egg for breakfast.

I know nuts are a good source of protein, but I hate them. They’re gross to mean. They get stuck between my teeth and the overall feeling of them being in my mouth pretty much just makes me sick.

Since my hair started falling out I am trying to take fish oil. It makes me feel guilty though, so sometimes I just don’t.

This hair loss thing is ridiculous. My once thick curly hair is just getting thinner and thinner and quick frankly it’s grossing me out that I have to clean the giant clumps of hair out of my bathtub every day. The only other reason I can think of why it would be falling out is because I just had it highlighted with a different kind of bleach than my norm. But I don’t think that’s likely because it was falling out before that too, so eh?

    Heeelp me….

    • ANSWER:
You should speak to a doctor about this.
Meanwhile, Here is a link for information about hair loss.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alopecia

The above article does not list protein deficiency as a cause for hair loss, but it does mention iron deficiency as a cause, among many other things.
Again, talk to a doctor. And maybe a registered dietitian.

  16. QUESTION:
I have a question about hair growth. Does Mira hair oil work also?
Ok, well I used to not eat hardly anything for about 5 months. But for two months I have been eating really good 3 meals a day, and lots of other stuff. But, I used to have pretty thick hair. I’ve lost quite a bit of it. it’s not like super thin, but it makes me upset, even cry a few times. I have to be sooo careful in order for it to not fall out a lot. I can’t scrub my head very hard in the shower or accidentally pull on it. I don’t put it in a pony tail and I have to sleep on it a certain way so it doesn’t pull out! Its so hard to be this careful! I take vitamins and eat protein every day. And my mom also says eating jello will help it, so I will do that. Anyways, I want it to stop falliong out soooo much! I want my thick hair back and I want to stop being upset over it! When i brush it if its wet ( ik you’re not supposed to, but I have to.) My doctor told me to get plenty of iron every day and take vitamins and eat fruits and veggies and I should see a difference in about two months or so. Also she said that I will notice my hair getting thicker over the course of the year. I’m 13 btw. Ok so, I have some vitamins that a lot of people have reccomended. Which ones should I take? Iron supplements, Prenatal, Biotin, and Hair and skin. So which ones should I take, or can I take them all the time ore is that dangerous? If these will not work, tell me what will! ALso, I found mira hair oil. I have read many reviews all over saying it works, but I just don’t know. I can’t tell if they have made people go out and answer yahoo questions and write these articles and make youtube vids where the comments are disabled! Please tell me if this will stop the hair loss! Also, I have been really badly wanting to grow my hair out to the end of my shoulder bones. Now it is too my collar bones. Will it work to make my hair grow faster? Thansk guys, and I want people with experience with these products!

    • ANSWER:
It does work. Mira hair oil works if you use it consistently. What Mira hair oil is nothing new. It is ayurveda and that is an Indian medicinal formula. Use din India a long time ago to encourage hair regrowth
It’s what I use to grow healthy hair. It’s a herbal oil that helps hair grow…seriously try it you will be surprised. Now you won’t grow like 6 inches of hair in a week or something crazy like that but I have found that my hair grew a lot faster than normal when I used Mira hair oil. Plus I got so many little new baby hairs in places I had when I lost hair Mira hair oil makes your hair grow thicker and shiny too….hope this helps you. I have used many hair products like Mira but seriously it is the purest and best (and most expensive) try it it’s just a natural hair oil
No matter what your hair issue is you will want to keep your hair healthy
Use a prenatal pill-these will help hair growth
      Use saw palmetto
      Take some biotin
You will want to eat lots of fruits and vegetables
You must bare in mind that you will achieve healthy and therefore faster hair growth only if you are healthy.

Were the worms round worms or tape worms? Did your de-worming medicine work on BOTH of those? If not, get some “Safeguard” which has “Fenbendazole” at a local feed store or Tractor Supply. AND… I hope you did the deworming for 3 days, which is necessary to kill all the worms.

Oatmeal or tea tree oil topically can help.
Vitamin E capsules in her food may help. Omega 3/6/9 can help also.

Putting baby sized sport socks on her paws can help prevent her from scratching her skin so much.

If her food includes corn, change dog foods.
I’ll include some websites below with home remedies, rather than those websites that are only there to advertise products.

You could also try on worst spots what I did with one of my dogs, and with my children as babies:
put on cortisone cream or ointment, and after you rub it in good, sprinkle some medicated power on it. I think you can get Mexana medicated powder at Walmart or your pharmacy.

AND… keep in mind that some canine medicines you can ask your vet to call in to your local pharmacy and this way you pay a LOT less for the medicine. I only learned this last year.

OH… non-prescription shampoo you can try that worked GREAT for one of my dogs for several episodes is Sulfedene Shampoo. I think I got it at Walmart, and it has sulphur in it and kills some of the things that cause the sores which can get mucky.

It’s hard for us to tell you what the problem is without seeing and touching your dog, like the vet did. And, maybe the vet should have done a skin scraping to test for what was there

Good luck, I went through a really difficult session with one of my dogs one year. -!-

  18. QUESTION:
I A Crazy Theory! (Need others thoughts) ?
Keratin, as many know, is a tuff, insoluable, protein that makes up most of our hair and nails.

I was thinking about some things, can anyone find any loophole or flaw that one of the fallowing couldnt work? Cause Im NOT a biologist, or anything like it, Im still in HS. So, help me with YOUR knowledge!

Could consumtion of the hair or nails (gross, i know) possible provide protein for the body? I mean, in theory, couldnt that pretty much ‘recycle’ protein that would otherwise be thrown away or lost.
If we aren’t getting enough protein in out diet, hair production is the lowest priorety of the body, and therefore would send VERY little protein to the hair and most to the muscles and tissue in the case of a protein shortage. well, i was thinking, if someone had the will to EAT their nail and hair clippings could they be providing most of the protein for hair and nails, therefore saving more protein from foods to build up tissue and other things.
I mean, really, it is recycling. like using paper: We use it, and discard it, but it is still the same material, the actual material of the paper has not been milked of its worth, so we recycle it to make the used paper into a new/blank sheet (like refreshing it) and as a result, we save wood, and there is more trees in the forest and a larger amount a wood to be used as lumber.
Hairs let go when its been in that spot too long, but doesnt it make sense that the protein still is useful? So why dont we, instead of discarding it, just pop it back into our body so it can rebuild more of the same thing without consuming more of the dietary protein which would most likely be used otherwise to repair more important tissue.

Also, could doing that as a child prevent, or postpone hair loss?

Any responces? any coments are welcome, even if its
    “your are a dumb S**T”
however, i would prefer something alittle more helpful!
    thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Because protein is a classification and there are tons of proteins needed to run the body. So eating fingernails only provides one protein (and not necessarily a digestible one) into the body but what about the other proteins?

That’s like realizing that motor oil is a lipid and frying potatoes in it. Just because it’s classifications are the same, doesn’t mean we can use it.

Or chitin is a carbohydrate but our body doesn’t digest it so we can’t live off of cicada exoskeletons.

So when people start telling you to eat weird stuff because it’s “protein”, just look at them with pity, shake your head and walk away.

  19. QUESTION:
    Anorexia personal experience? Please help?
Hi, I have been dieting for the past couple of months now and I can definitely see that it may have gotten out of hand. I have binged, but never purged, and I do tend to constrict myself from eating when I feel guilty from previous binges. I do not know if I have anorexia, but I can definitely see it as being a possibility. I have looked up the symptoms and I definitely am showing quite a few of them. Because I have gotten to get a little scared of what could happen to me if I keep this up, I have gone to the doctor. They took a couple of blood tests and they said something was irregular so I am scheduled to go back soon. However, of the many symptoms I am experiencing is hair loss, and it is starting to get my really freaked out. I used to have really thick hair, but it is now thinning excessively. Like I am talking clumps in the shower and when i brush it. I am trying to increase the protein in my diet and other nutrients and vitamins as well, but the really does not seem to be helping so much. I am also taking some vitamins and using some shampoo and conditioner with egg whites (excellent source of protein) and coconut oil (supposedly helps hair loss?). But none of these things seem to be helping too much, as I am still losing a lot of hair. I am just really scared and although I am going back to the doctor soon, I was wondering if anyone experienced any similar situations and has any advice to give up. If so that would be so excellent. I would really like some guidance here AND reassurance that I maybe won’t go bald! Ah please help, thanks.

    Additional Details:
I’m not particularly interested in looking to lose more weight, as seeing that I am either slightly underweight or just right for my height (I am just over 5’4″ and around 105 pounds give or take a few). I am more so interested in becoming healthy again, and then once I get that right I will look into just getting more in shape and fit rather than constricting my diet (maybe just exercising more)

    • ANSWER:
Maybe you have bulimia? You do not need to “purge’ in order to be bulimic. Some bulimics starve after a binge, and this is what you are describing. I would go to a doctor and describe it just like you did now. He can get help for you.
Bulimics are still in sense starving themselves, and experience the same life-threatening side affects as anorexics. You are losing your hair because you are not getting any protein. Vitamins are fat soluble and it doesn’t help you at all if you don’t have any fat. :) No matter how much you binge, you can not starve yourself afterwards. Please go see your doctor.

  20. QUESTION:
What diseases would you most like to see a cure for?
Can you explain what those diseases are and why you think they need curing?

I am perfectly aware that many people will say things like Aids and Cancer. Don’t get me wrong these sre devestating diseases that most definitely need a cure but there are other more forgotten or misunderstood diseases that also need our attention.

Mine (you can have as many as you like, though let’s keep it at between 1 and 5) are Epidermolysis Bullosa, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Schlerosis and Huntington’s Chorea.

    1. Epidermolysis Bullosa is a rare skin disease. This genetic disease is characterised by a lack of a certain protein in the skin. The lack of this protein causes skin to blister easily and painfully. Sufferers also suffer from alopecia (hair loss which has it’s negatives), blisters around the eyes and nose, blisters inside the mouth even which leads to eating and swallowing problems which would obviously cause many problems like lack of nutrients and poor weight due to not being able to eat properly, blisters caused by minor injury or temperature change, dental problems like tooth decay, pimples and similar skin conditions, nail loss/deformed nails.

They have a heightened risk of skin cancer but on its own it isn’t deadly but still I’m sure this would cause poor self esteem, anxiety (due to always being anxious about being careful not to blister), depression not to mention be extrememly dehabilitating and painful. It’s not common but just like my other two needs-to-be-cured they are nasty and painful and no one should have to live through that.

    2. Osteogenesis Imperfecta. You may also know this as Brittle Bones Disease. It is an uncommon bones disorder in which the bones are lacking in collagen, a protein that prevents bones from breaking. There are different types from very mild to death at birth. Sometimes the bones are so brittle that lightly tapping a brick wall could shatter the bones in their hands. Many people with OI end up in wheelchairs, their growth is usually stunted (some don’t grow past 3 feet tall), they get hearing problems, respiratory issues, scoliosis, a shitload of pain, depression (who wouldn’t get depressed from constantly being in pain, not being able to be a normal kid, probably having to be in a wheelchair and the chance of never having full independence. This is genetic in case genesis didn’t tell you that so you have it from birth), anxiety, barrel shaped rib cages and bowed limbs (which would cause other problems too) and a lack of self esteem due to their often differing appearance.

    3. Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. Basically this is getting arthritis as a kid. My best friend has it and altohugh hers is a lot better than it previously is (so much she regularly goes to the gym and has a personal training certificate) but it’s caused her a lot of pain. She’s had a lot of therapy including hydro and physio and medications that have done crap things to her body. Many people think only old people can get arthritis but that isn’t true at all so this needs a cure because kids shouldn’t have to suffer from arthritis (or any of the above things) when they’re meant to be happy, running around etc.

    4. MS: A slow going incurable disease that attacks the nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord. It is a slow death (and death always results) causing loss of balance and coordination before later on the person is no longer able to swallow or breathe on their own. Not a nice way to go and so needs a cure.

    5. Huntington’s Chorea. Very similar to MS it is genetic disease (if you have a parent with it your chances of getting it and not getting it are 50-50) in which nerve cells in the brain cell waste away. The symptoms are similar to MS with loss of balance, coordination, eventual paralysis, speech difficulties to not being able to swallow or breathe on own and then eventually death. Most people are diagnosed in their early 30s when symptoms begin to show and generally live 10-15 years after diagnosis so it’s a very long, cruel drawn out death. No doubt this needs a cure and fast.

Okay these are my five. What disease/s do you think depserately needs a cure?

I also think idiocy needs a cure but as this isn’t a proven medical condition I won’t talk about this.

    • ANSWER:
      Any and all autoimmune disease.

I don’t think there’s enough recognition about these conditions. There are over 100 different autoimmune diseases and they are pretty common. Basically an autoimmune disease is when your immune system begins to attack itself and your own healthy tissue. Some autoimmune diseases are organ specific, so they affect just one organ, like Hashimoto’s affects the thyroid, Celiac Disease affects the small intestine, Psoriasis affects the skin. But there are systemic autoimmune diseases that affect the whole body, like Lupus.

When you have one autoimmune disease, you’re more likely to have another. Autoimmune diseases can affect infants, children, adults, old people. The treatments used to treat autoimmune diseases are usually immunosuppressants, which leave you at risk of developing infections. Other drugs used are chemotherapy medications, steroids, anti-rejection organ transplant medications and other drugs that were used to treat other conditions.

I’ve been having symptoms of an autoimmune disease since I was 8 years old. My immune system attacks my joints causing arthritis, my tear ducts causing dry eyes, my saliva glands causing dry mouth and recently my liver, causing hepatitis. I also have other symptoms like fatigue, Raynaud’s, nail pitting, hair loss, nose and mouth ulcers and I also have Celiac Disease. I’m in my early 20s and have doctors appointments weekly, blood tests sometimes twice weekly, scans and my day is about planning my food and working out what medications I need to take. I’ve been in hospital three times in the past month because of my liver.

  22. QUESTION:
Rat ate a diseased rat after it died, is she safe?
My 1 1/2 yr rat Ellie had a healthy litter of 11 7 months ago. i kept one baby and found the others homes, but the baby i kept is a male so he became cagemates with his dad. In november i rescued a 1 mo (guesstimation) old baby rat from horrible conditions in a Pratt’s Pet Place. It was being kept in a plastic bin with 2 adult females, 1 which was pregnant, and the other who was nursing newborns. The baby was trampled over and looked like he wasn’t being fed, so i took him. He stayed in the cage with Ellie and about a month ago started losing fur along his back. i started taking out protein from his diet since that can be a cause in some young rats, and just this afternoon i found him dead & Ellie eating his intestines thru his side (from a small hole, it didn’t look like she got TOO much but she did have quite a bit of blood on her). Obviously he had some sort of disease, i also noticed he didn’t grow much. i’m not sure what he had, but can Ellie get infected from eating his intestines and blood? i bathed her and bleach-cleaned her cage, water bottle, toys, etc. Can rats contract certain diseases by eating the blood/insides of a diseased rat? What kinds of illnesses? What are symptoms i should look for, and how long until i know she is in the clear?

Also, i know she did not kill the baby. The hair loss and lack of growth indicated a disease. Plus eating a cagemate after it dies is common in rats, especially is the deceased rat is young, and providing the older rat sees it as her own (which she did).

Can’t afford a vet for a couple months. Thanks.
The vet visit to just get her EXAMINED is over 0.00, which i do not have right now. Details and useful info answering my question would be nice.

It really shouldn’t cost that much to take your furry friend to the vet and if it does there is help out there for that…Good luck ….

  23. QUESTION:
Dear people, i am a 28yo indian male .6months ago, i was diagnosed with ‘obesity induced impaired glucose?
    Impaired glucose tolerance and hypertension(140/100). that time(june2011), i was 104kgs . the doctor , a diabetologist whom i consulted adviced me to shed my weight asap.after undergoing the OGTT test, my test values are as follows;
    Fasting sugar- 96 mg/dL
30MINS after taking glucose solution- 160mg/dl

    1 hour- 160

    1.30 mins – 148 mg/dl
    2hrs – 120 mg/dl

he also prescribed me Metformin(Glycomet 500sr) and TETAN-AM for hypertension. he also adviced me low carb diet and physical activity.
FROM day1, i started walking about 10kms in the morning and an equal distance in the evening as well. i took sprouted seeds and vegetables with low amount of boiled rice. i totally stopped all sugars, coffee/tea, snacks, juices, junk food, nonveg , etc.
as a result of the above, i lost abt 24kgs(80kgs) in a matter of 5months. by the end of nov2011, the doc adviced me to stop medication. now my weight is 78kgs( as on 5jan2012).i stopped walking and workouts , just warm up for abt 20mins a day (both in morning and evening) i want to know whether i have aquired diabetes .. because even after stopping the medicine i am still losing weight. and also my hypertension is back to its 140/100 to 140/90. i totally stopped all medicines both metformin and bp tablets. AND MOST importantly, now body is deficient of minerals such as calcium. i have been feeling tingling sensation in my right foot after stopping the medicines. when i consulted the doc again, he prescribed me vitamin supplements to regain the minerals that i have lost in the past 6 months. One of my cousin told me (who is a medical student) that i might have aquired type 2 diabetes and thats the reason why i have lost this much weight in a matter of 5-6 months. i am too much worried. so, i went for Random blood glucose test once in every 15days days. they showed 91mg/dL and 82 mg/dL in a span of 2 weeks.

now i dont want to take any medicine for hypertension . but the doc adviced me to cut down salt in take totally .

i am so much worried beacuse i am a bachelor and my mom is a diabetic.and also i am bald since age 22. this makes me to look like a 40plus man nowitself. since am bachelor, this is hurting my social life too…. coupled with weight loss it puts me in a pityful condition. the same doc said that he wud suggest me MINOXIDIL topical solution for hair growth.
    i want to know answers for the following;

    1. for how many years i can delay the progression into type-2 daibetes?
    2. some ppl told me the stopping metformin can bring diabetes soon. so kindly clarify me regarding the same .
    3. doc advised me to include egg whites and chiken meat for protein food. whether this will improve my weight to some extent?
    4. i want to delay the progression into diabetes atleast till age 40-45. will it be possible for me to achieve the same ??
    5. i feel nervous when doctor checks my BP .. coz i feel nervous on seeing the mercury level in the sphygmomanometer. so i think my hypertension values manynot be accurate. and also at that time( 104kgs) , my TOTAL cholestrol values are much normal. so now, afterlosing morethan 24kgs, definitely those cholestrol levels must have come down much lower value. so i doubt i really got hypertension. if not, what else cud be the real reason>>

    thanking u

    regards

    • ANSWER:
People who have ‘obesity-induced’ diabetes are cured when they lose the weight. Not all of us diabetics are as lucky as you. 8^)

If you don’t have high blood sugar you don’t need the metformin. I use metformin also, and my dosage has gone up over the years. I’ve heard that metformin makes it a little easier to lose weight, so some patients gain weight when they go off it. But it won’t bring on diabetes unless you had it already.

Egg whites and chicken are good. Relatively low fat. The rule for diabetics is 1/4 starch, 1/4 meat or protein, 1/2 veggies. You are not diabetic but it won’t hurt to eat like one. And, as you know, diet and exercise work together, neither is nearly as effective without the other.

Keep treating your hypertension. More people die of hypertension than diabetes, at least here in the US. If you don’t trust the doctor’s sphygmomanometer, get your own. They are very easy to get and cheap here so I’m guessing you can find one there. There are even automatic ones that work with one finger, so you don’t have to know how to use them. The point is, you have to take responsibility for your blood pressure just as for your blood sugar.

You may have diabetes again later in life. I think the current thinking is that it’s just programmed into your cells and if you’re going to get it, there’s nothing you can do. If you eat and exercise as if you were diabetic, then at least when it comes back, you won’t do damage to your body before you learn you have it. That and keeping your blood pressure under control will lead to a long, healthy life.

I am bald too. I would rather have hair of course, but being bald is not shameful or sinful or anything. My dad (also bald) used to say that grass doesn’t grow on busy streets. My mom would say no, and it doesn’t grow out of concrete either.

  24. QUESTION:
Constipation/Food Fear/ Exercise/ Diet Woes. Please help me?
    Name: Kaytlin
    Age: 14
    Height: 5 feet 4.5 inches
weight: anywhere from 105-155. 105 is what i assume is my real weight. (ps i weigh myself in the morning before i eat, but it fluctuates throughout the day to as high as 115, but on some days it starts out that high)

Activity level: Sedentary-lightly active. Please tell me if i’m wrong about this one- I go to an hour long zumba class every other day. Zumba is basically high intensity dance aerobics (there is some debate whether it is high intensity or not, but all i know is i give it my all, and by half way through my hair is drenched!)
On off days, i do 45 minutes of zumba at home, or i run a mile. On both of those days i do about 10 minutes of normal bodyweight strength exercises like pushups, crunches, squats, etc. The reason i said sedentary-lightly active is because I often do have days where i have no motivation to move. at all.

Background: around march/april of 2010 i began weight loss journey, by following the South Beach Diet. Phase one of this diet restricts all carbs, except those found naturally in vegetables, and all dairy. I continued the phase for about 4 weeks, which is two weeks longer than normal. I followed phase 2 well beyond when i needed to, and mid-freshman school year, i began to eat more carbs. I still try to limit carbs on sedentary days, but i dont think thats bad.

at around September of 2010, the beginning of the school year, i noticed that i had really bad gas and gas bloat. Soon after, the constipation came. It’s been pretty terrible since then. For a while it was so bad that i couldnt exercise. I began taking laxatives, which were a nightmare. I gave up on that. Now, i can have bowel movements everyday, however they are small, and very difficult to get out. Often times i make myself very full of liquid because the force of the urinating forces those muscles to really push it out. Every few days, It becomes Diarrhea, but only for one movement. it doesnt continue for the rest of the day. It smells like toxic waste.

My parents believe, and my doctor too, and i guess i agree, that this could have come from lack of calories. For a while, i was eating less than 500-600 calories a day. By december, i was down to 105 lbs. I used to be 139, at the beginning of my journey. I began to use a tracker and i now track all my nutrients. here’s where it gets very very problematic.

I’m scarred mentally by food. I’m afraid of it, yet, not at the same time. At the very same time, i’m obsessed with it. I’m constantly getting into the fridge and “tasting” everything. Then i’m not sure how much i’m eating. I know i’m still not eating enough to be too much, but its a bad, and a very scary habit. I’ll binge on things that i know wont do damage to my diet, like an entire 8 cup bag of spinach. I try and eat the right amounts of fat and protein every day, but i usually eat under 1000 calories, and i pretty much never go over 1200 calories. I KNOW this is bad, but the reason i fear it is because i have gained fat and gotten flabby. I have been told time and time again that this is BECAUSE i dont eat enough, but i cant let myself solve the problem. I know if i eat more, i’ll initially gain weight, and even if i can fix it later, i’m just so so so so scared of it. I got healthy, skinny, fit, and i exercised obsessively and then after i got lazier, and started losing too much weight, and then putting on flab, i got really really freaked out. I cant control my brain!

Ok now i have questions about diet. This is for my ideal diet, so i know im not eating good now, but how does this sound?

1,800 calories on active days, 30 percent fat, 20 percent protein, 50 percent carbs
1,600 calories on non active days, 25 percent carbs, and then idk for protein and fat. do you need MORE fat on non active days, or more protein? cause i would eat less carbs on non active days, but i’d need to make up for the calories.
This is for maintaining, by the way.

If i’m totally wrong, can someone suggest a diet plan based on my activity and such?

    Also, a few more questions….

If i start eating more, WILL i gain weight? if i do, is it just because my body is catching up and then i can lose it again?

Do you really think i’m gaining weight? is it even possible to gain weight eating under 1000 calories? I cant really tell because of the constipation, but i feel flabbier and just, different…

Is there a way to gain muscle without gaining fat, or better yet, gain muscle and LOSE fat? believe it or not, i have excess fat. Seriously, ive gotten it tested. i think thats cause i lost too much muscle, and not fat.

If gaining muscle means i have to gain fat, will i then be able to lose the fat without losing the muscle?

OK, i know that was a lot of inf
OK seriously, did you even READ this at all? your totally missing the point! I LIKE zumba! i DONT need to lose weight i just dont want to gain weight!

    • ANSWER:

  25. QUESTION:
I have a few questions about dieting and calories…?
Okay, so here is the thing. I have previously worked at LA Weight Loss for 2 years and worked at a gym for a year. So I know the “proper” way to lose weight. You need to eat often, small meals and healthy food. Losing 2 lbs a week at most. Along with being active. I get that. However, I was in a car accident almost 2 years back that up until 8 months ago when I completed psychical therapy, I could do any working out. Before the accident I was 125lbs. I was 205 at my highest weight due to being sedentary, upset and eating bad. My fault, I know. :(

Anyway, I am getting married in 2.5 months. I want to feel good about myself and like how I look in the photos. Which I will need about 30 more pounds off, or more if I can. I am 5’2 and almost 25.

So here is my deal: I did a lot of internet research on calories. The min and max. How low is too low and at what calories that your body will go into starvation mode and so on. I read that just above starvation, depending on the person can be anywhere from 400-700 calories.

A lot of people say no less than 1200 calories and to lose no more than 1-2lbs per week. And the only reasons I found of why you shouldn’t do very low calories diets and lose fast was being deprived of vitamins and nutrients, that you are losing water and muscle, not fat.. or once you get the weight off you gain it right back because you binge and cant control yourself then gain even more and so on.

Starvation mode can also be triggered by if your body is used to 3000 calories a day and you all of a sudden drop to 1000, yeah its a shock. you need to ease into it. Before I dropped my calories, I was around 1200-1300. So I did not jump into it.

I also found out that Dr’s do 800 calorie diets for people. But it is monitored. Those people are also 300-400 lbs. Someone of that weight needs more than someone of my weight.

So here is what I have been doing for 2 weeks. I am staying between 850-1000 calories a day. I am taking Women’s One A Day multivitamin (and I also have a calcium supplement and Flintstone vitamin everyday, Lol) Here is what I eat: 2 servings of lean proteins, 2 servings of starches, 3 fruits, 4 veggies, 2 dairies and 1 fat. (this is the LA Weight Loss diet) However, I am choosing very low calorie items. Instead of a banana which is 110 calories, I will have strawberries for 35 calories. I eat healthy fats with omega 3 and 6. Basically I make every single calorie count and I never consume an “empty” calorie. I also have good carbs. I make my own bread and I can eat straight grains and oats. I eat nothing processed except my dairy as I basically have no choice. I also watch my fiber intake and get my recommended daily or very close to.

I am very aware and concerned for my body. I do not want to hurt it and I am not looking to get attention. When I did my research I looked up symptoms of being malnourished and “starving” and the symptoms were constant head ache, dizziness, being very tired and irritable. Also hair falling out and all.

So here is my thinking: I am getting more nutrients than someone who eats nothing for breakfast, McDonalds for lunch and Taco Bell for dinner. So to me, it seems better to eat 1000 calories of very healthy food verses junk and getting no nutrients and tons of fat. I think its crazy that people get criticized for not eating enough calories, even though they are healthy calories. But what about those eating too much EMPTY calories? Way worse in my book. I also drink AT LEAST a gallon of water everyday and I work out at the gym for close to 2 hours. 1 hour of cardio and then I go to the weight room for 45min and stretch for 15min.

I have a friend from the gym I worked at that is a personal trainer. I have been speaking with him about all this. And he said that everyone’s body is and can be different. To just really monitor myself and if I get those symptoms, to eat more. He thinks I am fine, especially doing it for such a short period. He says I am doing it in the best way possible and being as healthy as I can about it. Because there are TONS of Americans who eat 1 meal a day and its fast food and barely take in any fluids or vitamins!

Well let me tell you… I feel awesome! I am more alert, happy, very energetic, I sleep really well and never wake up tired. I have never felt better! So I think I am okay. I never feel thirsty or too hungry. I usually eat before I feel hunger. I eat 4-5 small meals a day. I Kinda snack all day really. 2 weeks ago I was 185 and today I am 171. So it’s working. No negative symptoms.

So my question is this: Is there something I am missing? Again, I looked up all the “dangers” of a low calorie diet. Not getting the vitamins I need… well between the multivitamin and healthy eating, I’m fine right? And as far as losing just water weight, I drink plenty and I also urinate often and its always clear. So it’s not water weight right? Plus I feel great. So am I doing myself right?

    I’m not s
My fats usually consist of Olive Oil, Avacados, Fish, or Nuts and I also do take a fish oil supplement. Sorry I forgot to mention that. Thanks for that answer. I get what your saying, but I still feel its better then someone eating 1200 calories of junk. So judging someones nutrient intake by just calories is not right. But yes, I will look into a high quality vitamin, Thanks! :)
Oh and my multi has 100% vitamin D, calcium and iron. Plus I have 2 dairiesa day. Usually a yogurt and 8oz of milk. And a calcium supplement which I previously stated. I think I’m okay in that department :)

I answered your question yesterday, but for some reason, it would not post (Yahoo! Answers is currently unavailable…)

First of all, let me tell you that it’s nice to get a question in Diet and Fitness, where the Asker actually knows what she’s talking about! You did your research on good nutrition and proper exercise.

I’m sorry you had a car accident, I’m 125lbs myself and I know this could happen tomorrow for me, not being able to exercise and gaining one pound a week! Then on top of having to deal with healing and physical therapy, now you have to tackle the almighty weight loss.

Usually, people use the “avoid the starvation mode” at around 1,200 calories, which would be good for an average woman like me. That number is your BMR, the Basal Metabolic Rate, before exercising.
(The BMR for women is the weight in kg x 7.18 + 795 and for men, it’s the weight in kg x 10.2 + 879).
A 200lbs women would have a BMR of 1,450 calories, so I’d say you’re short of a meal or about 450 to 600 calories.

Now, my BMR is 1,200 calories…
If I eat 1,200 calories, I maintain my weight.
If I eat 1,200 calories and exercise, I lose weight (one pound for every 3,500 calories of exercising).
If I eat 1,600 calories and exercise, I maintain my weight (providing that I do an average of 400 calories/exercising a day).
If I eat 1,600 calories and do not exercise, I will gain weight (about 3 pounds/month!!).

I would never, ever, ever eat under my BMR, on purpose, even in the healthiest way, because then my amazing body will adapt to lower calories requirements. It’s not really the starving stage yet, where the body is eating the muscle mass because there’s no fat reserves left, but once you have a lower metabolism, you will never, ever be able to eat normally again and not gain weight. Besides, I’d rather have a cup of milk than suck on a calcium chewable!!
Even if I eat 1,600 calories and exercise, I still use multivitamins (One-A-Day) and vitamins E and sometimes some extra calcium if feel I did not get enough that day.

There are two things in your question that I want to get out of the way.
First, you’re getting married and you want to lose weight to look nice on the pictures…what does your fiancé think about that idea? Was he already your fiancé when you were 125lbs or did he came up later. Some guys are attracted to big girls and will lose interest as you lose the pounds. Other guys will be attracted to skinny girls, skin and bones variety, and would lose interest if they gain 10 pounds. Whatever they say about your “personality” guys are really into body types (have you ever seen Johnny Depp with anybody other than very thin women?).

Second, you say and I quote “I feel awesome! I am more alert, happy, very energetic, I sleep really well and never wake up tired. I have never felt better!”
I felt the exact same way when I did a 10 days fast. Nothing but water. No nutrients, nothing. Then my body could free itself from the constant demands of digestion and elimination and therefore the mind was free to focus on thinking. In 10 days, I won a Chess Tournament, I learned a one-year course (accounting) and ace the exam and also I memorized the entire book about driving and got my license at my first try (I’m French and the driving exam is WAY harder than in the US and you rarely succeed the first time .
I did not have to go to lunch so I would go swimming instead, full of energy, as you said, alert and happy.
Healthy food did not do that to me, lack of food did.

So you might just feel great because you don’t have to digest so much. But this cannot lasts forever. At one point, you’ll need to eat more and under 1,200 calories, eating healthy is still a real challenge to get everything you need and not get hungry. I have no idea how you can manage to eat less than 1,000 calories and not be hungry or frustrated because all the good stuff are out of limit.
Food should be a source of enjoyment, not something you’re trying to avoid at all costs. Food is not only for the body, it’s also for the soul and you need a treat from times to times.

I agree with you, it’s not just about the calories but what your body needs. I could eat a Big Mac for lunch and one for dinner, and therefore meet my calories requirements for the day, while at the save time, clogging my arteries and setting the field for my heart attack or stroke.

About the 1 or 2 pounds loss/week. It’s not about water gain or water loss or muscle mass gain, it’s about fat reserves loss through exercising. You need to eat your BMR and then exercise for whatever you need to lose, knowing that each pound of fat reserves is 3,500 calories.
A 500 calories exercising daily would then make you lose one pound of fat reserves a week . This is already a lot of exercising (about 2 hours walking or 1h30 bicycling). You can exercise for 4 hours and aim for a 2 pounds fat reserves loss. Above that, you would have to be on vacation somewhere where you walk all day long, bicycle a lot, swim in the ocean and participate in a water polo game in the pool, do some trapeze, yoga and dance lessons and a lot of scuba diving and horse riding and dance all night in the night club!

I don’t know how long you will last doing what you’re doing now. It’s a question of commitment and you seem to be very committed but I’m afraid eating under your BMR will doom you for a life of very low calories diets and exercising or easy weight gains, because your body won’t need so much anymore.
You will still be healthy is you stay on a low calories diet (in fact low calories diets make you live longer) but you’ll miss out on one of the pleasure in life…gastronomy!

I wish you the best and happy nuptials!
