Protein Treatment

Best Way to Prevent Frizz Hair
Frizzy hair is basically dehydrated (loss of water) hair. The hairs become porous and lose its natural ability to hold moisture and become uneven and untamed. In frizzy hair, the cuticle layers are not held tightly together and thus the texture of hair becomes brittle and coarse.

Frizzy hair in whichever form you have it, is because the cortical layers have been deprived of proteins and moisture. Your hair requires its natural oils from the scalp of your head to smoothen it. For this to happen, you should not shampoo on a daily basis as this will wash away the natural oils from your scalp which actually have a positive nourishing effect.

The very best way to prevent hair frizz is to prevent it from happening in the first pace. And you do this by using a powerful herbal oil like Mira oil. It is a deep oil treatment that will keep your scalp moist which will stop the frizz. Use the oil twice a week and this would be enough to stop the drying process.
Frizzy hair doesn’t discriminate. It plagues both the thin and thick haired alike. If your hair has even the slightest wave or curl, it’s susceptible to frizz. This article details the six critical things you can do to launch a full-on assault on those unruly frizzies along with a list of things not to do.

For the best frizz fighter, go the extra mile and visit a salon or beauty retailer to see what products they carry. They might be a bit pricier, but salons tend to offer a high-quality selection that will get the job done, so you’ll end up saving money instead of spending the time sorting through the ones that don’t work.

Rinse with Cold Water: After you’ve washed your hair, give your locks a cool treat and rinse it again with cold water. This will help to lock in the moisture minimizing the appearance of split ends and therefore frizz.

Protect from direct exposure to the sun. The sun causes tremendous damage and can result in fly-away and poor manageability. Just wearing a hat when going out in the sun will protect and keep your style healthier.

Egg yolk – not a lot of people realize this but this sticky and smelly thing can actually be the one to solve all your hair problems. Egg yolk, when used in your hair, makes it shiny and soft and more manageable. All you have to do is spread the yolk to your hair and make sure to massage it. Leave it for about 15 minutes before rinsing with cold water.

The most important thing to keep in mind when dealing with curly hair is to avoid drying it out. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. The curlier hair is, the more care needs to be taken with it. Flat irons will indeed bring curl under control, but unless a great deal of care is taken, flat ironing can quite easily damage hair, and long term can even lead to baldness.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
After applying a protein treatment and washing it out, should one use a deep conditioner?
I have relaxed hair and last time I washed it I used a protein treatment. It made my hair really dry.

Should I use the protein treatment again today and then use a deep moisturizer afterwards?

Or should I just use the deep moisturizer and skip the protein this time?

    • ANSWER:
I started using protein treatements about 2 months ago. I used it for two weeks straight one time and my hair started breaking off. I then learned that if you don’t balance it with enough moisture then you can have protein overload which can cause your hair to break off. I deep conditioned with a moisturizing conditioner as soon as I learned that and my hair stopped breaking off. Now, whenever I deep condition with a protein I will deep condition with a moisturizing DC afterwards. Or, if I use the protein only, then I do it like once a month or something and use the moisturizing DC in-between.

  2. QUESTION:
What is a good moisturizer to follow up a protein treatment with?
I plan on using the Aphogee Two Step treatment, but I’m afraid because I’ve already used the Balancing Moisturizer with their regular shampoo, and I don’t think it’s going to be a strong enough follow up for their protein treatment. I want to buy another moisturizer, but I need recommendations.

    • ANSWER:
You don’t have to get rid of you moisturizer you can just add some oil(s). When in doubt add oils. Coconut, olive oil, wheat germ oil, sunflower oil, walnut oil, and hemp oil are perfect! Coconut penetrates the hair shaft, olive oil nourishes the hair, wheat germ oil, sunflower oil, walnut oil, and hemp oil are ceramides/essential fatty acids. Heck, you can even melt some shea butter and put that in you moisturizer if you want. I’m sure you have at least one of these oils in your house.

Keep calm you don’t have to buy a new moisturizer. ^-^

However, some great moisturizers after a heavy protein treatment:

1.Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Moisturizing Conditioner
      2.Nexxus Humectin
      3.Keracare Humecto
      4.Elucence Moisture Balancing Conditioner
      5.Motions Moisture Plus
      6.Verifen Complex Advanced Conditioning Treatment

Can I use a protein treatment directly after hilighting my hair?
I would like to apply the highlights, rinse and shampoo, then apply a 30 min. protein treatment and conditioner. It this possible? Will the treatment change the color or lifespan of the new highlights? Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
yeah Do it darling, it won’t affect your colour it will only help strengthen your hair. There are only ever 2 types of treatments, There’s Protein or Moisture.

      Protein strengthens your hair.

      Moisture… well its self explanatory.

Hope that answers your question, take care :-)

  4. QUESTION:
What is the best leave in protein treatment for hair?
I have natural hair I would like to keep growing it so i am wondering what is the best leave-in protein treatment product that I could use. I wear braids a lot but I never experience any sort of breakage. I would love a product that is not too heavy and could be use weekly or something to that extent.

    • ANSWER:
it’s a spray called It’s A Ten. and it’s sold in most beauty supply stores or salons for about . trust me it works. it is a miracle product for me. it’s in a purple bottle with a pink top. definitely try it. and you can use it daily after you shower, applied to damp or towel dried hair.

  5. QUESTION:
Is it a good idea to get a relaxer 2 days after getting a protein treatment?
I’m going to my hair stylist to get a protein treatment today and my mother is planning on giving me a relaxer. Good idea?

    • ANSWER:
Absolutely! Protein is what keeps your hair strong and healthy. It protects your hair from most of the damaging effects of the chemicals. I try to give myself a protein treatment at home about twice a month. (I recomment Joico K-Pak deep conditioning system. Found at most reputable hair salons, Ulta, and Trade Secret) Leave it on just a little bit longer than the bottle suggests. It really helps. Daily, I maintain my hair with a softening shampoo and conditioner (I use Redken All Soft) I also use a soy wheat protein conditioning spray every day as a thermal protectant before blow drying. My hair has been chemically treated a lot with bleaching and other chemicals but I still have extremely healthy hair because I take these steps to maintain it. BUT BEWARE!! There is too much of a good thing. Too much protein building up on the hair follicle and strand can actually cause your hair to break because of the weight it adds. Using the softening shampoo and condioner helps to balance it out.

  6. QUESTION:
Should i do a protein treatment if I have damaged hair from bleaching?
I do sometimes hot oil treatments but I also bought a Protein treatment, should I use it? if so how often?

    • ANSWER:
      yes
Im sure bleaching like other chemicals takes out the proteins in your hair and it is your responsibility to replace it.
It is smart too do a protein treatment once every month
maybe once every two weeks if you KNOW your hair can handle it
TOO MUCH protein can make your hair hard and break easily.

  7. QUESTION:
how long should i wait to bleach my hair after doing the Aphogee 2-step protein treatment?
i just finished diong the aphogee 2-step protein treatment, after being recommended to do it before bleaching my black, purple and blue hair to a light blonde.
but , i was wondering , when can i bleach my hair? should i want a few hours, several days? or can i do it immediately.
my hair is definately alot more softer and healthier now then it was before i did this treatment.

    help ?

    • ANSWER:
wait about 24 hours or so until the proteins set in then bleach it so you don’t do as much damage to your hair!

  8. QUESTION:
Should I get a protein treatment for my hair?
I have blond highlights (6months old) and I am relaxed (since about a 6 days) and my hair is shoulder length and healthy and shiny but I have naturally fine, curly hair. I was told that everyone that has relaxed/color treated hair should do protein treatment but I am terrified. I bought the Aphogee 2 step pack and curious about any results. Please help thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Yeah, you need to do protein treatments for relaxed hair because that relaxer breaks your hair down pretty bad. If you’re not sure, go to a stylist(one with GOOD reviews) and have them do it the first time, then ask them how many times you should do it afterwards.

  9. QUESTION:
Should I wash my hair before getting a protein treatment?
I’ve bleached my hair and it’s damaged so I’m going to get a protein treatment. I’ve never done it before. Should I wash it first? Or should it be unwashed?

    • ANSWER:
A protein treatment usually consists of a wash before the conditioning, so there is no reason why you need to wash your hair before the treatment. However, doing so will not affect the treatment so if you feel more comfortable going into the salon with freshly washed hair it won’t make any difference.

  10. QUESTION:
Can I bleach my hair then use a protein treatment?
I’m going from really dark brown to pastel pink. I assure you I’m getting the salon to do it and I realize it’s bad for my hair, blah blah blah. That’s why I’m asking if a protein treatment will help after I get it done.
Don’t nag at me for the health of my hair please. It’s just hair and it grows back.

    • ANSWER:
I recently got my hair bleached and I asked my hair dresser what would be the best treatment for my hair and she told me about this stuff they had there and it works wonderful just ask your hair dresser what should you use and they’ll tell you. Most salons have hair repairing stuff there you can buy. :)

  11. QUESTION:

  12. QUESTION:
Is the Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise Treatment For Damaged Hair product a protein treatment and?
better than an ordinary egg protein treatment (the ingredient in the product has egg in it btw)?

Any black women(or mixed black woman) answering ever used this?

    • ANSWER:
It’s about the same effect.. you don’t want too much protein anyways.
Make sure you watch your moisture/protein balance as well (read here: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/278612/the_fine_art_of_protein_and_moisture.html?cat=69 ) but, there’s nothing special about it

  13. QUESTION:
Are there anyway that I can use just mayonnaise as a protein treatment (no egg) or use coconut virgin oil as 1?
As a protein treatment. Is using the coconut oil alone just as good? If so how do I make a protein treatment with either for relaxer stretching/natural black hair?

If so, please show me the best Youtube video about it or a page with steps?

  14. QUESTION:
What is the difference between a hair reconstructor and a protein treatment?
Hi :) I am a 14 year old girl with relaxed african hair. I am looking for a product to use on my hair after relaxing. I have heard that protein treatments should be used after relaxing but what about re constructors? What is the difference between the two and which one is better to use after relaxing?

    • ANSWER:
Both are pretty much the same, just don’t use it as often as too much protein can damage the hair rather than help it. It’s kind of like vitamins, you can take some to be healthy but too much can actually cause problems. Find what works for your hair. Recontructors can be used after relaxing but I would go with the protein treatment first but the other can work just as well. Just make sure to use some form of protein to return that to your relaxed hair as it is stripped from the chemicals in the first place. This will help your hair be strong and keep it from breaking off to grow long.

  15. QUESTION:
What is the best protein treatment for african american relaxed hair and a good shampoo and conditioner?
My hair has breakage on a little area on the side of my head and it shedds I would like some good suggestions of shampoos, condiioners and protein treatments. I tried Aphogee and it didn’t help.
and is Frederic Fekkai Protein RX Anti-Breage Treatment Mask a good product

    • ANSWER:
Which Aphogee did you use? Did you use the APHOGEE Intensive Two Minute Keratin Reconstructor , or the APHOGHEE Two-Step Protein Treatment? The Two-Step Protein Treatment is the best one and you must apply moisture afterward because protein drys out the hair. I suggest deep conditioning with the Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deep Moisture Conditioner after this treatment to help restore moisture.

May I also suggest trying the Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise mixed with one egg. Cover with a plastic cap and keave this treatment on the hair for 30 minutes. Another good deep conditioner is the Curls Hair Ecstasy Hair Tea. Make sure you condition your hair every time you shampoo. You may want to try co-washing also(shampooing with conditioner only – do not use a conditioner that contains silicone), to restore moisture loss which is the biggest reason why African American hair breaks off.

Sleep in a satin scarf or bonnet, moisturize and oil hair daily, do not comb your hair while it is dry, and limit the use of heated appliances to prevent breakage.

Best Shampoos: Kinky-Curly Come Clean Shampoo, Curls Curlicious Cleansing Cream, Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deep Moisture Shampoo

Best Conditioners: Curls Ecstasy Hair Tea, Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deep Moisture Conditioner, Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing Pack

Best Protein Treatments: Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise, Aphogee Two-Step Protein Treatment

  16. QUESTION:
Is protein treatment the same as deep conditioning treatment?
Protein treatment is when you put mayonnaise and egg in your hair right??? E.g. Organics Hair Mayonnaise.

Is this the same thing as deep conditioning hair

    • ANSWER:
A deep conditioner can have protein in it. Protein makes your hair stronger and can help repair damaged hair. So, yes, a deep conditioner can also be a protein treatment. But, not all protein treatments are deep conditioners. I use Nexxus Emergency as a protein treatment, and it’s definitely not a deep conditioner.

There are also moisturizing deep conditioning treatments. You’ll find that there is protein in many of the products you use; some will be light proteins, and some might be heavy proteins.

  17. QUESTION:
Should I do the hair protein treatment before or after i wash my hair?
I’m doing the hair protein treatment with mayo, my hair needs to be washed though because it has gel in it,should i put it in my hair then wash & shampoo & condition my hair or wait or do it without the shampoo & conditioner, also i use heads and tail shampoo & conditioner

  18. QUESTION:
whats the difference between a protein treatment you get at the hair dressers and the one you put in your self
I put red kens gold treatment in, is there any difference between that and a protein treatment?

    • ANSWER:
I am not sure, but just read the ingredients and look for the word protein. Conditioning treatments are either moisterizing or protein based and the ones you buy and do yourself are very close to the salon ones, they just cost a whole lot less. Now if a salon offers treatments with the use of a stemmer or hood dryer and you don’t use heat there will be a difference in how well the product is absorbred by your hair. Brittle hair needs protein, dry hair needs moisture.

  24. QUESTION:
is avocado hair mask a protein treatment?
I want too treat my hair with a natural goodie for once. So i’ve seen some that do avocado masks but they didn’t say much about whether it is a protein treatment or how I should use it?

Should I-shampoo, then avocado mask then condition with a moisturizing conditioner?

    thanks for the help.

    • ANSWER:
the avocado mask is good for dry, damaged hair. it really makes your hair shiny and soft. make sure to fully blend the avocado before applying it to your hair. You should shampoo first with a conditioning shampoo (i would suggest using DermOrganic Conditioning Shampoo made with Argan Oil) then apply the avocado mask and leave it in the hair for 15 to 20 minutes or so. (the longer you leave a mask in, the more it conditions and detangles your hair). Rinse the mask out fully and do not use a conditioner after you have done this. towel dry your hair gently, and then apply a serum or hair oil to your hair to help lock in the moisture gained from your use of the mask.

  25. QUESTION:
is it okay to do a protein treatment and then follow it up with a hot oil treatment?
i bought this aphogee protein treatment for my hair and it basically adds protein to your hair but it is kind of intense. i also want to do a hot oil treatment with just olive oil or coconut oil but i dont know if doing both the protein treatment and hot oil treatment will be too much for my hair or does it not matter?

    • ANSWER:
You only need to worry if you’re doing chemical over chemical, which can cause your hair to break off. Hot oil treatments aren’t chemical and neither are most protein treatments so it should be fine.

  26. QUESTION:
What is a Protein Treatment for hair?
What is Protein Treatment for hair, does it really work?

    • ANSWER:
Yes protein is what keeps your (excuse the scientific language)hair connected to the polypeptide bond which is a fancy way of saying holding your hair together. When you use chemicals on your hair it looses its strength hence over processed bleach, coloring breaks. So what a protein pack does , is it helps to put back in what you took out. You always want to shampoo and do a protein pack once a week and always use a moisturizer for last , this helps to seal the cuticle and make your hair super shiny

  28. QUESTION:
Aphogee Two-step protein treatment and hair coloring?
I really need advice. Should i do the protein treatment before or after i get my hair dyed?

    • ANSWER:
I am in no way shape or form a licensed beautician. but i would suggest doing the treatment after the hair coloring. simply because coloring your hair anytime does damage your hair so it just makes sense to damage your hair then treat it with the aphogee treatment. it may sound silly but it doesnt make sense to treat the hair then damage it again with hair dye

  29. QUESTION:
I got a straightening perm/protein treatment on my hair on Thursday afternoon at 4.30, when can I wash hair?
The treatment I got is like a brazillian relaxer/straightner, similar to a straight perm, but less damaging as it is a protein treatment. Also, am I allowed to use dry shampoo or talcum powder to make my hair not look greasy in the period where I’m not allowed to wash it? When can I wash it at the earliest?

Can you guys let me know where to buy it and how mucjh it is? Price really isn’t an object here, but I would liek to know :)

I’m from Brisbane btw, so yeah. Thanks :)

    • ANSWER:
Hey, I’m Australian too. I’d recommend Redken’s Extreme (Rescue Force) hair mask (it’s a dark blue tub). I buy it from Petra’s down here in Melbourne, not sure if you have that chain up there, but you would find it at a similar hair supply store. I think from memory it’s around . I use it for colour damage once a week and it’s excellent.

In between I use a Goldwell colour treatment which is not protein-based but a moisturiser (so I can use it more often) and that is amazing too. This one I leave in overnight and it’s about . It leaves parched hair soft and managable.

ApHogee 2 Step Protein Treatment for natural, black hair?
I’ve never chemically processed my hair, but it is moderately heat damaged. I’ve heard great things about the Aphogee 2 Step Protein Treatment; however, I was wondering if the product would be too much for my hair.

For those with experience with the product, should I try out the protein treatment (along with the moisturizer) or should I search for a milder product?

Oh, and is it necessary for me to buy a hooded-dryer as well? Can I simply use my blow-dryer instead?

    • ANSWER:
Aphogee 2 minute Reconstructer: Is a light protein deep conditioner, good for weekly use for natural hair.

Aphogee Treatment for Damaged Hair: Is a HIGH protein deep conditioner Must be followed up with a moisturizing conditioner. This I would recommend to relaxed hair. I wouldn’t use this one unless you REALLY needed it. I’d start with the Aphogee 2 minute Reconstructer.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using an egg as a protein treatment?
I want to know if anyone has tried using eggs in their hair, and if so, please tell me how your hair turned out when using it. Give procedures and what you used in combination with it.
Well there is the other thing you have to do, by doing a moisture treatment (deep condition) in order to get the protein/mositure balance in check or else your hair will end up dry and hard, but only if you don’t do a moisture treatment.

    • ANSWER:
      Hello (:
Well personally, I didn’t see any change in my hair after using the egg treatments. It does however somewhat strengthens the hair but it’s hard to wash out, it smells and it makes your hair reallllly hard.

  38. QUESTION:
How to perform a protein treatment at home (using eggs or mayo)?
Do you scramble the egg? What do you do?

    • ANSWER:
Ignore 1st link – spam. Anyway, there’s loads of ways to do it but my fave is to get one egg yolk (the yellow bit, not the clear/white stuff) and put in a bowl. Next add an equal amount of nice smelling conditioner (the egg smells a bit at the end and this helps) and mix. Apply, I don’t bother with gloves but you could, put on a shower cap, then wrap your head in a small towel or turbie. Give it 20 mins to a few hours then wash out and condition as normal.

Mayo is just egg yolk and oil so if your hair’s pretty dry you can use that instead but it will make your hair greasy until the next wash. If you do use it go for the full fat stuff.

Finally, buy the most ethical treated chickens’ eggs you can because if your country sells battery eggs and you use them that’s just nasty – even worse because it’s for a beauty treatment and not for food. Also, happy free chickens are said to produce more protein in the yolk :D

  41. QUESTION:
should i put deep conditioner in my hair after using a protein treatment?
i used a reconstructer/protein rebuilder, should i deep condition now?

    • ANSWER:
      yes

  42. QUESTION:
How do you use a protein treatment?
Please explain. Is it like a deep conditioner where you leave it on your hair for 30 mins then you wash it off with shampoo and conditioner?

    • ANSWER:
I usually do a protein after I shampoo and then I’ll rinse it and do a deep conditioner. The reason why you should condition after doing a protein is because protein dries out your hair so you’ll need to restore that moisture by conditioning. Follow the directions for how to use it. If I leave it in my hair for too long then my hair will get dry and hard, but it depends on the protein treatment.

  43. QUESTION:
whats the best protein treatment for hair?
I want something that works well but isn’t too expensive. Or if you know any other treatments to repair damaged hair.

    • ANSWER:
What I use is a leave in conditioner. It’s called healthy sexy hair soy-tri-wheat leave in conditioner. I found it at Target for like 10 bucks. I really like it so far…no complaints

  44. QUESTION:
Can you suggest a great hard protein treatment/moisturizing conditioner for african-american hair?
I have heard about Aphogee 2 Step and Nexxus Emergencee. Familiar with these? I heard that if you use these, you must follow up with a INTENSE moisturizing conditioner. What do you suggest? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
I’ve never used Nexxus Emergencee, but I have used Aphogee 2 Step… My hair didn’t like it at all initially. It made it very hard and the texture felt almost straw like. However, I began to notice the difference after a couple days. My hair usually doesn’t break, just the normal shedding but I had spending a lot of time out in the sun and I think that could have been the cause… But after using Aphogee, it stopped.

But remember, what works on others, may not work for you so you can try both. I ALWAYS use a moisturizing conditioner after doing a protein treatment. Also, if you don’t want to you can try a homemade protein treatment. Egg, honey, evoo, and avocado. VERY messy, but it works and my hair likes it. It isn’t as strong as Aphogee as some people have complained.

And I recommend Organic Root Stimulators Replenishing Paks… OMG, I love that stuff. If you can find the bottle, get it. If not, you can buy it in packs. It’s a great moisturizing conditioner.

  45. QUESTION:
Should i use ApHogee two step protein treatment im a white female with bleached hair thats mush?
I have high lights put in my hair she left the foils in for 2hrs yes I no big mistake But now I don’t no what to do, when its wet and I comb it there is only blonde broke off mush in my comb u can pinch in ends and they fall off in your hand I have long beautiful hair I don’t no what to do I don’t wanna be bald or cut it please help me!!!

    • ANSWER:
Yes. Use ApHogee. Spray it in with a squirt bottle and then clip it up. Let it harden. When it is hard, wet it until it softens up. Do not try to work through it when it is hard. It can break off. When soft, shampoo.

ApHogee is made with plant based placenta. In the past it was made from animal placenta. But placenta is all protein and works like a bandaid to coat your hair and keep it from breaking off.

  46. QUESTION:

Only use it ONCE ever 6-8 weeks for your hair will break like none other. Make sure you follow up the hard protein treatment with a good moisturizing deep conditioner (bioInfusion olive oil deep conditioner is what I use, love it)

  49. QUESTION:
I don’t want to repurchase my protein treatment, what great things does grapseed oil do for the hair?
Can i use it as a deep conditioner? Also should i apply it before or after I shampoo?

    • ANSWER:
To improve your hair- stop using a lot of heat. Blow-drying, curling, straightening, or any other heat you use to style your hair can cause damage. Vitamin A is also good for your hair. There are deep conditioners and shampoos that contain this. I don’t know much about grape seed oil. I also use a leave in conditioner that you can put into wet hair before you style it. It helps prevent my hair from breaking.
